McDonough County, IL
The Housing Authority of McDonough County (HAMC) operates two properties in Macomb, three properties in Bushnell, and the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program throughout McDonough County. McDonough County is largely an agricultural and industrial region.
Macomb is approximately 4 hours south of Chicago, 3 hours north of St. Louis, 1.5 hours south of the Quad Cities, 1.5 hours west of Springfield, 1.25 hours southwest of Peoria, and 1.25 hours northeast of Quincy. Bushnell is a small rural community, located 18 miles northeast of Macomb.
Macomb, the County Seat, is the largest city in McDonough County. We are a rural community with a population of around 20,000 when Western Illinois University is in session. Our population decreases to around 11,000 in the summer. Bushnell population at last census was 3,150.
Macomb is the home of a branch of Spoon River Community College. There is one public school system, and two private schools. Bushnell is the home of a branch of Carl Sandburg Community College. There is one public school system consolidated with two other rural schools. School bus service is not provided to students who live within the City of Bushnell.
Major employers in Macomb are the Western Illinois University, Spoon River College, McDonough District Hospital, agriculture, and factories. Bushnell's major employers are from agriculture and factories.
McDonough District Hospital is Macomb's hospital. There are many medical offices; major hospitals are located in larger surrounding cities. Bridgeway Inc., Mosaic, and North Central Behavioral Services provide services throughout McDonough County.

Eisenhower Tower Public Housing is a ten story secured high rise located in Macomb's central residential area. The efficiency and one-bedroom apartments are furnished with apartment size stove & refrigerator. Apartment maintenance is provided at no cost, or for a nominal charge. Some apartments are equipped with special features for persons with disabilities. You will find on-site postal service, laundry facilities, community room, TV lounge, computer access, patio, and community garden. There is a large parking lot, and public transportation stops on-site. Eisenhower Tower is within walking distance to the Western Illinois University, Spoon River College, Macomb's public library, and historic downtown square.
Rent is based on income at all properties, or you may choose the Flat Rent. All utilities are provided with Dwelling Rent at Eisenhower Tower.
The Go West Bus System runs through the streets of Macomb daily and on weekends. Some bus routes are concentrated around the Western Illinois University campus, while other routes wind through the city to enable residents' easy access to the most-traveled places. Buses on the city routes operate from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM Monday through Friday and 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM on Saturday. Buses also operate later at night during the WIU regular school year between the Macomb Square, the Western Illinois University campus and along East and West Jackson Street. Campus route buses operate until Midnight during the regular school year.
Door-to-door transportation is available for senior citizens, the disabled and many other groups in McDonough County. These services are provided by the American Red Cross and Bridgeway. All of the vehicles are accessible for handicapped and those with walking difficulties. The service is door-to-door, and reservations for service must be made in advance by calling 837-RIDE (7433).
Prairieview Townhome Public Housing is a residential community located on Macomb's fast growing east side.
Prairieview Homes offers 1-5 bedroom size apartments with washer and dryer hookups, full size stove and refrigerator. Apartment maintenance is provided at no cost, or for a nominal charge. Ample parking lots are provided, and public transportation stops on-site. Wee Care Day Care Center, an income based day care, is located next to the complex. Prairieview Homes is a short walk to the public elementary school, shopping and employment opportunities.
